What Types of Bonuses Are There
by MarkMiller
The deposit bonus usually is for advertising. It's supposed to display an attractive offer to get players to sign up for the first time. Such bonuses are awarded just once and there are really only for players who register for the very first time in this room.
Often the bonus amount comes in steps. E.g. The bonus will then be paid in $ 10 increments. Other conditions can be that there's a time limit to unlock the bonus, for example you must collect a certain number of points within 60 days after signing up, so the bonus gets credited to your player's account.
Qualify for Poker bonuses
A poker provider thrives on rake. The rake is the percentage the house takes. If a poker hand is finished, the poker provider takes a small percentage of the pot from the winner. How much varies from room to room, usually it's between 3% and 5% of the pot and the maximum rake is limited to $3.
In a tournament it's more obvious, since there's a separate tournament fee, which goes to the provider. For an individual poker player, the rake is negligible small. But when you consider that Poker is played around the clock at countless tables, you see that a poker room can really make some money.
If a player now manages to play break even, which means neither to lose nor to win after a while, he doubles his deposit. That's what makes it so interesting to unlock a bonus. Although you need a lot of patience, you're not so much under pressure to necessarily win.
Thus, you have to play many hands to get the bonus. Here, however, only the so-called raked hands matter. The poker room takes, as described above, a small percentage from the pot every time.
For that the game must come at least until the flop, however. If a poker game is finished before the flop, the poker room doesn't earn anything and hence such a round doesn't count as a raked hand.
Some poker rooms also offer a hybrid form, which means you receive a part of the bonus immediately, the other part only after you've played a certain number of hands. Another distinction is the deposit bonus and the loyalty bonus.
